March 4, 2008

Today my English teacher Mrs. Ramirez spoke in the symposium. The theme was “Frontera Retorica Symposium & Open House Featuring”. The purpose of the presentation was to discuss “what makes for whicked problems & ways scholars of Rhetoric & Writing Studies can contribute to solving such problems”. There were presentations of undergraduate students, graduate students and presentations of candidates for the ph doctorate. There were three persons presenting their research
The first persons that presented talked about teaching toddlers to cook and look at their behaviors why they are rhetoric.
The second speaker talked about rap and rhetoric.
Both of them were interesting in the subjects they had but my teacher that was the third person who presented got more my attention because she is researching about “Mestizaje” and it became more interesting when I found out that it has to do with our ethnical background.
After Mrs. Ramirez finished, a lady came out with her ideas, good ideas I think.
Overall it was a good presentation and I liked the research my teacher is doing I hope everything goes all right =).
Here are some pictures I took of her while she was presenting.

Rhetoric

Photobucket
I would like to choose the border, because it has a great history. And it does not only divides two countries in which in one side we can see the poorest part of Mexico and in the other side we can see a country of greater expectations, but it also deals with history of some part of the United States that belong to Mexico years ago and dreams of many people who would like to be in the United States and also with dreams of those who would like to go back to Mexico to see their family. I was thinking also in a documental of the man who did the movie "Super Size Me" but the theme was living with a Mexican illegal family for 60 days. And for me this is rhetorical becuase the border means lots of things for people, some of them the ones that I mentioned before.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day

Yesterday, February 14th was the traditional day of love and friendship. Every year people exchange or give flowers, cards, candies, etc. I saw a lot of people at school really excited with flowers or teddy bears in their hands. Is really nice to have a loved one and know that their care about you and receive all of this nice things. But I was wondering if half of them know what this is about... Well I found out through the internet the history about this day. The celebration is because of a saint called Valentine and it says:
“According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.”
This history just take part of many that are out there but I think is good to know unless one of them.
I hope that you guys had a great valentine’s day and wish you the best =)
And received all of those great things(chocolates, cookies, etc =).)

Civil Rights Act of 1875

This week in my history class I was assigned to write a paper about the “Civil Rights Act of 1875” and explain the reason why it was declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. It really got my attention because the U.S. Supreme Court declared unconstitutional this law. The reason why it was declared unconstitutional was because they did not wanted people of color interacting with “whites” and concluding that they were not violating the laws that already existed, informing to people that they were going to be “separate but equal”. When this period concludes, slavery and racism were out of the system. The nation was declared free. Now my point here is, I was thinking about the presidential elections and how people is criticizing the candidates because one of the candidates is a women and another candidate is a man of color. I think in some point it is an act of racism, because there are some people who are pointing out how the nation would be if they have a woman as a president or a man of color. I don’t know if you are taking my point here, but concluding with this I don’t think is right the way we behave as humans, why if there is a paper a legal paper that says “everyone is equal” we don’t accept everyone as the way they are. First of all no one is perfect, no one is going to have the same color of eyes, skin, hair, etc. but we have one thing in common we are humans and we were brought to the world to be friendly and interact with others not to hurt us. And I really hope that one day, before other thing happen in the world, the feeling of superiority and racism end.

PEDIATRICS
All my life I have been living in a circle of doctors, since all the members of my family work on the field, I have experienced a lot of medical situations. Since I was little, I decided I wanted to become a doctor, it was easy to say and my parents did not thought I was actually going for it because is not an easy career and they don’t think I am intelligent enough but I don’t care because is what I really want it and I think with a lot of effort I can do it. Now that I am in university, I realized that I really want to become a doctor, because I really care about people and I want to help all of those out there that did not have the resources to afford medical services, medicines, etc.
The field I am interested in is pediatrics; it deals with the care of infants and children and the treatment of their diseases. It is said that is a hard branch of the medicine because you are dealing with infants and is hard to know what is wrong with them when they get sick because they don’t talk and you don’t know where the pain comes from. But I think is an interesting profession because you get to know kids and they get to know you and well I think is really interesting and is what I am interested on. And the last thing I can say is that if I have two priorities now in life is my family of course and school.
